Regular exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle. The primary goal of the Physical Education program at Pathfinder is to have all students participate and find success and enjoyment in a wide variety of class activities. Physical fitness activities build strength, endurance, balance, flexibility and self-esteem. Individual skill building is essential to a physical education program in order to promote all forms of physical activity and lead to lifelong habits.

Performing teamOur program encourages each student to work on individual skills at their own pace, against no other standard but their own goals in anon-threatening and non-competitive environment. Finally, since nutrition is also a very vital component of a healthy lifestyle, we will have discussions and activities centered on the importance of combining a healthy and nutritious diet with daily exercise.

K-8 Performing Team

HoolahoopWe have a Performing team consisting of  K–8 students that have performed at Pathfinder, senior centers and the West Seattle Street Fair. The team includes students who are very proficient at: Juggling, Jump Rope, Hijax, Moon Bouncing, Hula Hoop and Unicycling. Practice takes place before school from 7:55 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. in the gym.

All students are invited to perform with us and we are always looking to add new features to our shows!

This year's team has over 75 students performing and has performed at the Elder's Luncheon in November. We will be doing performances at 3 West Seattle Senior Centers  in May.

Unicycle Team

UnicyclingThe Unicycle Team practices every Friday after school and has performed at Seattle Sonics and Seattle University halftime shows playing basketball on unicycles. In addition, the unicycle team is a regular performer at the West Seattle Parade and in July 2010 performed in the Torchlight Parade.

Kids Marathon - November

Kids MarathonFor the past 14 years, Pathfinder has had a large contingent of students participating in the Kids Marathon. The Kids Marathon is an excellent way for students to set a big goal for themselves: run a full 26.2 mile marathon, without injuring themselves. Students have a month to run, walk or hike the first 25 miles of the marathon. The final 1.2 miles of the Marathon is run with 3,000 other Seattle area students at Seattle Center and is a spectacular way to complete their goal and finish their Marathon.

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a curriculum based, experiential learning program that utilizes the power of running to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program is offered twice a year to 3rd-5th graders, during the spring and fall, at various locations throughout the Puget Sound region, including Pathfinder K-8. Each program session is 10 weeks long and consists of 20 lessons. Program sites meet twice a week for 1½ hours in the afternoon. Each session is led by a team of trained female volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls through the fun and uplifting curriculum. Along the way, the girls train together to walk or run the non-competitive New Balance Girls on the Run 5k (3.1 mile) event which takes place at the end of the program session. Completing the 5k event give the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment!
